Choice Piece
Title: 911 first responders
size: 2ft x 2ft Medium: Paint, Canvis, Paint brushes, Oil paint, and Stickers Completion: April 2021 Exhibition text: My inspiration for this project was someone's post on tiktok of what was happening to our community around the world. I feel like I had a great connection to the choice I had made for this painting. There was a big family emergency that happened about a month ago, so this is for my family and for the first responders. This painting is to thank all first responders for their help throughout the past years of doing their job. The biggest takeaway from this project was learning how to paint something that I have never done before but something that is happening today. |
Inspiration:
All of these photos were from tiktok. While I was watching what was happening in our countries, that had gotten me thinking about what I had wanted to do for my painting. Ive wanted to give back to the first responders in a way where it can be memorable. There were so many people angry at the police for doing their job but if their were out of there uniforms they would be in the same place as the community but they cant just go against their job because they have bills to pay and families to take care of.
So many first responders have died due to protesting, doing their job and Covid-19. In all of these photos are different protests that were happening due to some rights that had happened to our community. I know that these photos were just an inspiration of a police officer but it also has given me the idea for this choice piece project. I feel like our community isn't even being heard but also feel like our first responders are also not even being heard either.
Planning:
In the first photo there is my planning of how I had wanted my choice piece to look like. There were two different backgrounds I could decide which was the color black and the main focus would be the inside or a fire background that would clash with the painting. I have used the fighter fires logo and in the middle I have put the name of my piece and on the outside are the first responders which are doctors, fighter fighters, paramedic, and police officers. The hardest part of doing this painting was trying to figure out where I had wanted my different pieces to go. In the second photo are my swatches I had explained why they are important and how it affects my painting.
Experimentation:
Process:
The beginning of the process was to draw out the fighter fighter design so I know where I would be painting. The first time drawing out the design was in green chalk but I was having a hard time trying to draw everything out even and nice. The second time I drew the design it was in pencil. It turned out really good, I tried to make the four outside pieces bigger so that I will have enough room to paint the designs I had in mind. The whole drawing design outline was drawn by hand and nothing wasn't used to help me so I can more experience for my drawing hands.

On the right side of my piece is were I have decided to but the doctor painting. For the doctor design there is a doctor that is wearing a face mask. She's like the lead person of that ER, and in the background there is the Covid-19 bacteria. I have put that part there because Covid is still happening and it gives this piece meaning secse I had gone through during this time period and captured it. On the bottom left corner there are two surgical doctors that are almost touching the earth and the reasoning behind that is because all doctors around the world suffered from this pandemic trying their best to save people but they do have their downs. It was very hard for them because a lot of people were dying on the watch and couldn't find a way to help them.

In this photo there are two things done but I am going to talk about the middle first so first things first I have chosen to put the name of my piece in the painting. I have chosen 911 first responders because in all four parts there are the main heros that save people in everyday life. These people have gone through a lot to get where our community is today. Behind the name is a certain kind of background I have chosen which is like a fire background. The second thing on the bottom of the painting is a police officer in a building now the background has bars behind him and on the side of him is a window. The main colors for this piece are a lot of different tones of blue and black which give that part of the painting a better outlook of where the officer is.
An update on the doctor part of the painting is completed. And on top of the painting there is an ambulance, i'm not done with the paramedic part yet but I plan on putting a paramedic worker next to the car. I have but the perimetic car in the painting just to give that part more depth for the paramedic piece. And for the last part is the fighter fighter but let's start off with the background first so the background is the same theme as the center of the painting but a little bit lighter. Now there is a main fighter where his back is turned and has a lot of detailing. Now by his butt it says brothers but that is because all men and women fight fighters hangout and do their job together so they call each other brothers and sisters.

Reflection:
I have to say I had really enjoyed doing my choice piece. The reason why I had wanted to do a painting of all first responders was because I just wanted to thank them, after what we all have been through like Covid-19, corintened and going through the protesting. I also have a special meaning behind this painting, in February one of my closest cousins had gotten murdered and the first responders were trying their best to try and find who had killed her and was one of the big things why I care so much for first responders. I do have to say doing the bubble letters was a struggle to get them lined up but over all went well with the whole painting.
Critique:
Similarities- The similarities between my inspiration and my choice piece is that they both took place in today's society. They both capture something that is good and the bad from our communities, like the protesting, Covid-19, etc. They both also have a meaning between culture and identity which bring this painting and photography similar.
Differences- Is that in my painting I capture all first responders doing something that helps our community in a positive way. In the photograph that is almost like a negative but a positive, for an example like the protesting that had happened that was a bad thing because something happened with the first responders but at the sametime our community is stuck up for what they believe in. I use lighter colors to please the eye and my inspiration had used and captured a darker tone.

ACT Responses:
1. Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause effect relationship between your inspiration and its effect on your artwork?
The cause and effect was affected by the community and based on today's society. This affects my artwork because this affects me, I had explained everything in the process. 2. What is the overall approach the author has regarding the topic of your inspiration? The overall approach was to say thank you to the first responders that our community hardly says. 3. What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, culture, etc. While you researched your inspiration? Through the process of painting that the first responders do stuff for a reason like pull us over or give us a hard time and that's because they are only trying to do their job but to help the society. 4. What is the central idea or theme around your inspirational research? The central theme is based on first responders and how they over step their job for the past year and few months. 5. What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research? The inferences were based on the good and the bad based on looking at something. |
