Positive (Part 1)
Title: Beauty
Size: 25.3cm x 35cm Meduim: Color pencils, Illstration boards Comletion: November 2020 Exhibition text: Through the process of doing Beauty I had used different shading and tones to create something that looks like from a magazine. For this project I had used two magazine covers there both from different generations but they have some similarities. One of them is by Edward Steichen in 1933 and the second one is by Nino Munoz in 2018. What I have done with Beauty was to create and design a new piece of clothing. For both magazines their hands go up to their face so I had decided to put the hand in a way where it can come together to look alike. |
Inspiration:
Edward Steichen
Edward Steichen
Edward Steichen had made this unique photography piece on Dec 1, 1933. He captures the mode, shadow and the different colors that capture your eye. Edward was an American photographer, painter, and a museum curator that helped transform photography into art. After a century of doing art, in the 1920s he had produced a new style and fashion illustration for magazines. Steichen's inspiration was when his mother encouraged him to become an artist, and left school at the age of fifteen. His natural talent was painting, drawing which developed when he had started posters for a company. Steichen was in command of all of the photography of the American expeditionary force in World War 1. He had given up and abandoned painting of the soft and heavily style which had gotten him fame as a photographer.
Nino Munoz |
Nino Munoz made this beautiful and colorful piece in May 2018. He captures something powerful, thinking, and something that you can't describe. Those three things makes this photograph come together and makes something that is like you don't know what the model is thinking. Munoz inspiration was based off of someones photos that are in black in white and those photos capture the same mood that he had captured in his. The meaning of this magazine cover was for the spring and summer but not only that it was also for beauty and fashion, to be able to persuade people to go shopping and to feel beautiful. Nino Munoz uses bright colors to pop out the makeup and the shadows to make the photograph stand out more. |
Planning:
There two pages are showing my planning and the process of what colors I had used throughout the whole entire project. Now one the first page I had drawn just a mini sketch of how my project was going to look like and I also had explained the difference between the two sketches. On the second page there are almost like swatches for color pencil just to show what colors I have used, And then on the bottom of that page I explain about the different shadowing that I have done in a way which impacted my drawing in a good way. There was one thing that I had forgotten to add and that was when I was doing the shading and coloring everything in I never just used one color I used multiple and I would always add white to everything to make the colors darker. I had noticed when I was using white often it changes the colors into a little bit of a darker color which sets the mood a little bit.
Experimentation:
For my experimentation I had wanted to try out a drawing before I had done anything else and that's when I had got into a variety of detail's and was trying to figure out what I had wanted to do for my project. As you can tell from the three photos I have taken for my experimentation photos I have almost done a little of everything to see how I was going to start my project. The reason why I have done this kind of experimentation was because I wanted to make sure that I am adding on layers lightly and hard where it could capture the shadows and the beauty of how I was drawing. Through the process of experimenting I had used a variety of colors on the face and hair to see if it would make the perfect piece.
Process:
Through the process of doing the beauty project I have used a variety of light and dark colors I also had used different techniques of how I had used the color pencils. One of the best techniques in my piece was to have the color pencil move the way you want the body to flow. For the romper that she is wearing I had created this piece of clothing myself, And added a spring and summer color to the texture. For the handin the two magazines their hands are in a different position so I had decided I would make the hand almost the same but put those to positions together. For the face I had a variety of colors where I had added yellow, pink, dark pink, light brown, medium brown, really dark brown, skin tone pink, skin tone peach, white, dark purple and yellow to get that make up look in my piece.
Reflection:
Though doing the opposite piece was difficult, the research was hard to find sense I had done it based off of magazines. There were a few times that I had picked out some magazines that didn't have a photographer, and so I would have to find a different inspiration. I have to say that this project took a lot of time to do. It took about over 10 hours because I wanted to make sure that it looked like my inspiration. This project was my least favorite project, I used to enjoy drawing but now once I realized I don't enjoy it as much as I do with painting. One of the parts that I had enjoyed doing for this project was having all of these ideas for the process of drawing it out and how it would like. I feel if I had more time on my hands I would probably work on it more if I did ever have the chance too.
Critique:
Similarities:
One of the main similarities is the mood that they both have the effect on, almost like a gloomy look. For both of their faces the makeup and shadowing is rough for the old look. I had used multiple different colors on the body that I didn't even know that would be great for both inspirations. The hand is about in the same place I wanted to put the hand where I could get both inspiration hands in my artwork. |
Differences:
For my piece Beauty there are mainly light colors but also just a slite of dark colors. The theme of my illustration is for spring and summer. The clothing that she is wearing is one of my own pieces that I had created. For my illustration part 1 I had mixed the old and the new to get this positive affection for my piece. I've also given her a look with a muscular arms sense now that people exercise to stay in shape.
For the Vogue piece it is from 1933 so it has this very old texture, which means that the colors are very dark and just a tad bit of light colors. Behind her there is a very old antique mirror that captures her reflection a little bit in the back. She also had short hair that is curly and I had my illustration with long hair and curly just the hair color is a little bit lighter.

ACT Responses
1. Clearly explain and discribe how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inpiration and its effect upon your artwork? Its pretty easy because the relations to both of my inspirations are part of my illustration project, there were some similarities and differences in my art work.
2. What is the overall approach the author has regarding the topic of your Inspiration? For both of my inspirations they both have a main topic which was for the first one it was based on fashion in the winter from 1933 and the second inspiration was based on beauty and fashion for the spring and summer in 2018. So for my topic in my piece is fashion, beauty in the summer. 3. What kind of generalizations and conclussions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. While you researched your insparation? I have noticed in my inspiration from 1933 there is more religious then from today inspiration. Today we have so much better things now than back then, but thats how photographs have so much background. 4. What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research? The main idea was based on beauty and fashion back then that what women cared about but now these days women care about how they feel and if they look nice. 5. What kind of inferences (conclusions reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning) did you make while reading yout reacherched? What I had learned from my research was how people can persuade someone to buy something just looking at a magazine. Not only that but how my inspiration, and their inspirations are the same and they use the same mood and tones. |
