UWM Hybrid Heroes
Title: Super mask
Size: --cm x --cm Medium: Cardboard, Hot glue gun, Box cutter, pencil and paper Completion: February 2021 Exhibition text: My inspiration for this project is by Wonder woman by William Moulton Marston and H. G. Peter, and Catwoman by Bob Kane and Bill Finger. While I was trying to find a way to have a great connection with my Hybrid Heroes project. I've never thought my most two favorite superheros can really connect with my personality and who I am as a person. I've found varieties of techniques on putting the cardboard together. I've also learned about the different colors mean based off of all kinds of superhero personality and body. |
Inspiration:
The creators who made Wonder Woman were William Moulton Marston and H. G. Peter. The creators who made this character had envisioned Wonder woman as an ideal love leader, and the type of woman who should rule the world with the strength like superman. Out of all female superheroes Wonder Woman is the most famous female out of all of them. Wonder Woman has three colors on her which are red, blue and gold; these colors evoke different themes and ideas. Red represents Wonder woman's armor but it also represents blood and battle, blue represents peace and serenity, and gold represents the conflict that goes with the red but the gold can also mean the truth behind everything. Sense there were all male superheroes back then the creators were like let's make a female superhero that can inspire anyone but especially young kids and to celebrate female empowerment. Wonder woman's personality is compassionate, caring, stubborn, opinionated, highly competitive, outgoing, and an immortal amazon.

Catwoman by Bob Kane
and Bill Finger |
The creators who made Catwoman were Bob Kane and Bill Finger. Catwoman started to come out around the 1940s, she is motivated partly by her own self interest. Catwoman's character is based off of a professional thief and somewhat love interest of superhero Batman.
With Catwoman's life as a villain the murky moral compass has made her relationship with batman more complicated. Catwoman's original name was supposed to be "the Cat" that steals valuable things. She was just supposed to be just a supervillain but ever since the 1990s she has been often doing the wrong things for the right reasons. She wears this full body suit with a mask or even a full head hat/mask, and she uses a bullwhip as a weapon But Catwoman has multiple different kinds of leather clothing. She was an orphan where she had to learn how to survive by herself on the city streets. Catwoman's personality is a woman who has pride and temptation, skilled, determined, and somewhat wild. |
Planning:
For my planning I had really great ideas come to mind right away. My goal was to find super heros that are based on my character and personality. As you can tell based on my planning I have chosen my first idea which was catwoman and wonder woman, I have used different unique parts of their body to add to the helmet. In the first photo that has my planning sketches in, on the side I had explained why I have chosen those superheroes, why I had added different body parts to the helmet, and how it fits my personality. In the second photo are my ideas on how I was going to put my project together, and in the writing I plan out the colors, size, and the pieces are going to go. The threed picture is a sketch of my ideas of my cat tail, each colors that are on the tail are from the head. The tail will also have a smooth texture as the head like catwoman and wonder womans outfit.
Experimentation:
My first idea was to make a flat head and bend it and then connect it with the body. This is just a showing of what I thought was going to work but then did not work. I've made the pieces on the head like shapes so don't mind that but this was in my process and that's when I knew I had to change things a little bit. Right next to my process photos I've talked about how it was not working out and how I needed a new idea for the structure. I have to say though it took about a week to plan things out but it had taken a month to figure out how I was going to start it. The side of the head is good but it was just the front part I was trying to figure out. |
Process:
After I had started planning out my project and how I was going to put things together, I started to do measurements of my head and started to cut things out. This part took awhile since drawing the pieces on the cardboard was difficult, it was difficult trying to get the pieces the same size and trying to figure out how I was going to make the structure unique. In this picture this is the structure of the mask that connects to the side of the head and the top of the head. Later on in the process I will be cutting out the small details like the ears, the shapes from the body, color, and the other part for the eyes. |
After I had finished all of my measurements and cut out the whole structure of the head, now I get to glue the little parts. In the top right picture you can tell I made like little slits all the way or halfway to the eye and half of the side head, that's where I've glued and the parts in the photo. I've made those cuts to the structure because when I put it together it gives the cardboard a little bit of like a more flexibility, so when I put these six pieces together it would actually look like a really cool and a different kind of super mask. I had to also bend the pieces where I could glue them together but I had glued them almost in like order so it would be a lot easier for me. |
In the last paragraph I was talking about how I kind of put these pieces in order well I had put the two long cardboards that are from the side of the head together with the long strip; i've did that for the right and left side of the head and once that's completed I've connected to the eye together on each side and that's how I had gotten to this part of this process. Now while I was glueing the pieces together I was having difficulties because the hot glue did not want to stay on the cardboard. I've also had to clue on the cardboard a certain way almost on an angle. |
This is the part where I've gotten to glue both sides of the head together. While I was glueing the head from the back to the front I had an idea where I could make the mask bigger. And that idea came from just glueing the back a little bit and where the only the eyes started and ended, but there was a huge gap in the middle where I can make the top flat but I didn't do that idea because I had liked how I had my idea in the first place. Later on I will be glueing the straps together that are dangling from the sides of the head. That strap part is for the chin on the catwoman's mask where it covers her whole face that's why I had added a thick strap so that it can cover my chin. |
In this photo I've completed putting the black background onto the layout of my head, I've used big shapes and little sapes to get this amazing design where color adds a really great touch to things. Now the next part is where I've been excited to show the finishing touches to my project like the symbols and the shapes from all over their bodys. Even though my process has changed big time, I can't really explain how it happened because that's what's going to happen if you keep using the same layout form that chearned into something new. |
In these two photos this is where I had started on the tail, first I had soaked the cardboard into water once it was all wet, I had brought it outside to get the shape of it so when it dries up I dont have to worry about the shape. Once that part was done I added scraps of newspaper and did a thin layer of paper mache. It would give it a little weight even though the cardboard was light. After the paper mache I have started glueing my color squares to the tail, it was hard to make it smoothly sence sense there were tons of curves. I've also tried mixing up the colors as much as I can so it dosen't look like it was in a pattern, I've wanted it to look like those colors were put there for a reason.
This is the final product of my catwoman and wonder woman mask. There were some changes throughout the process of making this helmet but it was worth it, the black that is on the side and in the back of the head is smooth and the eye parts are also smooth but it has lettering to create different shadows from both of their bodys. In the back of the helmet I had wanted to add more color in the back since it was all black so I had added Wonder Woman's W belt from her costume in the lower part of the helmet.
Reflection:
I have to say that the Hybrid heros were a challenge for me, I mean I've done projects that were outside of school using cardboard, paint and hot glue but it was never like this project. I feel like I had done a great job on figuring out what I had wanted to do because when I put the mask on it feels like the crazy me is ready to save some people and I just feel like it fits my personality so much. My planning process has changed big time through the steps I've shown, even my layout. What I was struggling the most about this project was how can I get started with the cardboard and my measurements. But I can say that this project turned out really well for me. It was almost how I had pictured it but in a different way.
Critique:
Similarities- The similarities between my inspirations and my box project is that I have used all of their colors together for the head and the tail. I've also used the same shape and structure of the head from catwoman. I've also used different body parts from there costumes and had put that together on the head like Wonder woman's W for her belt is on the back of her head, the gold design that on the forehead crown, and the lighter colors that's on her body represents the white that's on the front part of the mask.
Differences- Is that I have used four colors for the mask none of them have that much colors nor blue, white and red on there face shields. The mask has smaller eye holes than the catwoman's mask. I've grabbed different shapes from their body parts and added it to my artwork. My helmet has straps that are open, not closed together like catwoman's mask.

Act Responses
1. Clearly explain and describe how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and its effect upon your artwork. Between my artwork and my inspiration are pretty much the same, just mixing them together to get the better personality of me but also the characters.
2. What is the overall approach the author has regarding the topic of your inspiration? The overall approach is to have my two favorite characters and two superheroes that have the same personality as I do. And based on my inspiration are the characters, colors and how their suits are made. 3. What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration? I've learned about the creators who made Catwomen and Wonder woman but also their characters made based on a fantasy. 4. What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research? The main theme is the superheroe's identity that can match mine personality. 5. What kind of inferences (conclusions reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning) did you make while reading your research? The whole rechearch for Wonder woman was incredible but for Catwomen she really did not have that much background information. |
