It Can Be...
Title: It Can Be...
Size: Unknown Medium: Fabric, needles, thread, and a sewing machines Completion: July 2021 Exhibition text: For my project I have decided to create a quilt. My inspiration was the exhibit from the art museum and other quilts from other artists. I wanted to create something more comfortable where you get lost in thought just thinking how anyone could get inspired by just three letters. |
Inspiration:
This quilt was by an unknown artist, but what I can say is that this quilt is very inspiring. It has 2 different kind's of shapes that have a different design or color which some have an inspirational quote. This reminds me somewhat of different sessions which almost hits home. Some of the fabrics look like it could have been used off of something that was special.
|
My other inspiration was by Margaret A. Beattie. Margaret was inspired by her grandmother, while she was grown up she was used to being and seeing quilts all of the time since her grandmother made them. This quilt was roughly made around 1860, most artists call it the crazy quilt. The reason why it was called a crazy quilt is because of the fabric and bold colors as the primary design elements. This quilt was not about its style but the movements which were encouraged by inspiration. |
Planning:
The first page of planning was based on what my project was going to be until I have changed my process through the way of using different fabrics and learning all of the new things. Now in that photo I am explaining what it had ment and why I was using the fabrics I was. The second photo is my second choice and up ended being my final project piece. I do explain the process and the steps I have to make to complete this project.
Experiment:
For my experimentation I had to learn how to use a sewing machine first before I could learn how to stitch things together. So I have decided to test out the different stitchings, fabric and sewing methods. In this photo I wanted to test out the thicker fabrics before I have done the super stretchy and thin fabric. My first idea was to create a blanket until I've gotten the idea to create a quilt. Also through my experimentation I've learned some techniques on how to do quilting even if it was different shapes besides squares.
|
Process:
Before I had chosen what fabric I was going to use or how big I wanted my quilt to be, I had to decide on the color theme. Now I have chosen vibrant colors that are my favorite colors but also because these colors make me feel like home. I've decided to add the fabric of France, since that's something that I enjoy. Once I had chosen my colors I had to plan out how big I wanted my squares to be so I've done 3X3s. After I was done cutting all of the squares I had to plan out where I wanted each color. I was trying to put all different colors in different spots so that the same color wouldn't be right next to each other.
|
After finishing organizing and planning out what and how I wanted my quilt to be like I got to start sewing them together. Now while I am sewing I tend to mess up with my straight lines. I didn't like how it turned out at first but then I realized that it almost looked like it was meant to be imperfect. This was my first time sewing or creating a quilt so this was something new that brought me up to a challenge. Once I sewed all of my pieces of fabric together I had to iron the fabric so that it wasn't recoly. Now I had to go back to planning and see what I had wanted to put on my quilt like a design or a quote.
|
Instead of creating a design I've chosen to do a quote. I wanted to do something short and simple with only three words. Without realizing it, I seem to be saying It can be... without realizing it. That's when I knew that's what I had wanted to put on my quilt. So now I had to figure out how I had wanted to put that in bubble letters, and what part of the quilt. For my bubble letters I have chosen to do cursive. Since I have experience with cross stitching I had decided to do cross stitching for my quote. In the photo this is one of my process photos of cross stitching "Can". As you can tell I had drew it out on the fabric, but what I had used was a fabric pencil.
|
After completing the cross stitching, I was finished with the front side of my quilt. So now I had to decide what I had wanted to do for the back. For the back I wanted it to be white but then I realized I didn't have enough fabric so I used the light purple fabric. The front part I had used a sewing machine and the back part I had sewn it by hand. Once I've completed this whole project I had iron the front and the back so it didn't look wrinkly but that was after these pictures.

Compare and Contrast:
Similarities- The similarities between my inspiration and my artwork is that it reminds us like home. Hers was inspired by growing up and being by them all the time to create one. For me I was never grown up looking at quilts but the fabric with a quote that inspires me makes me feel like home.
Differences- The difference between my inspiration artwork and mine is that Margaret goes on the wild side with her colors and the shapes. Now I wanted something simple where I dont want people to look at it and say there's too much movement.
Reflection:
This was my first ever time creating a quilt. I believe that it turned out unexpectedly. I was going for a quilt that has straight lines and something that had meaning but instead I've made something more like feeling home and being inspired to do something in your day to day life. Using a sewing machine was not easy but after my experimentation I've learned the different stitches and the basics that you need to know.
