Painting based upon photography
Title: Speechless Size: 6cm x 6cm Meduim: Paint, Paint brushes and a canvas Comletion: September 2020 Exhibition text: While I was finding a way to get different techniques on my painting I've also found a different variety of colors that I was messing around with and thought those colors would be great for my painting. I tried to paint something that is unique, beautiful and speechless. In my painting speechless I focus on using Figural Expressionism to capture the feelings. The artist that influenced my painting was Frida Kahlo, her painting was speechless, unique and lonely. Frida Kahlo has influenced me as an artist to get different vibrant colors and detail. |
Inspiration:
Frida Kahlo was considered one of the greatest Mexican painters, which she is known for many portrait's. Kahlo's inspiration was by nature and the effects of Mexico. She did not believe she belonged to any movements but she straddles multiple movements, which are Surrealism, Figural, Expressiasm, and maiye realism. The majority of Kahlo's work are self - portraits, often using herself. In some of her other self - portrait's open her body to display the female internal body and the horrific medical issues she has experienced throughout her life. Through her life she had tons of Artistic things in life that had gotten her into an artist, her father was a photographer. While Frida was younger she was one of many girls that had went to school, and she would always hangout with the intellectually minded students. Based on this painting "Self Portrait with Thorn Necklace" there were multiple symbols, and in everyone one of her paintings has a clue which might include the speechless and emotionless expression on her face. |
My planning process was pretty easy. For my goal that I had set for myself for my painting was to do different techniques, and to have my painting in the area of a Figural Expressionism. In these two photos the process was when I had started my painting and I needed to get my swatches so I have organized based on which area and put the colors underneath that area. I have used three different sizes of paint brushes to complete the process of doing my painting, in the photo I had but the estimated size by the paint brushes. In the second photo I talk about which part of my photo will I be using, how it can connect to my inspiration and what main colors I had used to complete the process of my artwork.
Experiment and Process:
These are the three pictures of the upclose which are my ideas from my main photo. One of them that is zoomed on my face is to capture that like the wow factor but also speechless. Like you don't have any words to say about it. The next one is the crown that's supposed to represent nature and like my surroundings. And last but not least in the one with my hands together this part is supposed to be religious and to just have a point or a clue based on what was happening in our community.
In the first picture with the writing is where I had gotten some of my information from the same as for my inspiration. That whole page is a Figural Expressionism based on different artists and that's when I found one of my favorite artists. On the second photo is my progress of how my painting is going. First I had started to draw on the canvas where I was going to put my face and just to make sure it looks like my photo. After I had completed that I had started painting on the face first and then worked my way past to the other parts of my paintings.
Compare and Contrast:
In the painting "Self portrait with Thorn " by Frida Kahla she has a panther and a monkey on both shoulders which represents bad luck and something evil. In her self portrait she also uses Dark colors to portray the feeling of loss. Not only her pain represents her relationship but also her culture.
|
The similarities based on my inspiration and my piece is that we were both really not smiling. In the " Self portrait with Thorn " Kahlo is wearing a necklace and I am wearing A leaf crown. They both represent good luck. Now both of our pieces represent something, we both were in a relationship and were both having a hard time. For both of our pieces there speechless even though we both had a really rough life based on medical issues and outside of our issues. Based on our backgrounds we both had tried different things to find our hobbies but the one thing that most stuck out to us both was art. Both of our strokes from the paint brushes are smooth and neat based on nature and hair.
|
In my piece I use brighter colors for my face and hair, I tried to get the effect to get the texture of the leaves. My portrait is how I love nature and I would do anything to take a risk.

Reflection:
My overall process of doing painting based upon photography was the most favorite one that I have done. At one point I did not know how to start my project so I just started on with my painting. My feelings with this project was that I am happy how everything turned. With me being quarantined for about two weeks I had so much time on my hands where I can just focus on my project. For a while now I knew what artist I was going to choose for my inspiration, Frida Kahla is one of my most favorite arts out of all. One of the most challenging parts of this project was that everyone's website was blocked and no one could do their project, so our teacher had to put back the due date based on tech issues.

Act Response:
1. Clearly explain and describe how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and its effect upon your artwork. My inspiration and I have a lot in common which we both have lots of health issues, relationship issues and our community issues. I believe that I have captured all of that in my painting as Kahlo had done, I know for sure that my painting is speechless. 2. What is the overall approach (point of view) the author (from your research) has regarding the topic of your inspiration? The main topic is pain and speechlessness which make the painting more understandable. The category that the artist is in is Figural Expressionism. 3. What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. While you researched your inspiration? I have learned what all kinds of artist inspirations were and they were unexpected to me. I've always thought it's what they've been through but a lot of it was based on scenery, culture and stuff that reminds them of something. 4. What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research? The main idea and the theme about my inspiration is that Kahlo art is based on her culture and the pain she went through, throughtout her life. 5. What kind of inferences (conclusions reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning) did you make while reading your research? I have learned more about my favorite artist and what's the reasoning behind her self-portraits. In all of Frida Kahlo self-portraits all have a symbol that represents her life outside of her life. |
