The Historic Book of Paintings
Title: The historic book of paintings
Size: unknown Medium: Paper, gouache, cardboard, texture snake paper, needle, rope/string, and glue Completion: July 2021 Exhibition text: For this piece "The historic book of paintings" is based on my love for books. I've chosen to mess around with the textures and the look on the inside and outside of the book. For my inspiration I had to choose 15 images that looked interesting to me which were from Etsy. These 15 images had inspired me to create something that's from the 1800 to 1900s design. Though out the year I'll be adding more paintings to this project to make it feel more like an art book. |
Inspiration:
For my inspiration I had to choose 15 images that looked interesting to me which were from Etsy. I've decided to go with this 1800s to 1900s look. All of these photos I have chosen do have a meaning to all of them. As for the jewelry it's something that represents a necklace I have from my great grandmother. I've chosen an old looking paper book to represent my love for books. For a while now I've been into rustic old books from a while back which was my inspiration behind this whole project. I've chosen this certain kind of coat because it used to be the old fashion coat that most people would wear. I was always obsessed with these kinds of coats but probably because the French looked good in them. When I was younger I always found it interesting that there were different postage stamps so I've chosen this one, I believe it's from the Egyptian. Same goes for the coin, when I was younger I also found it fascinating how different shapes, sizes, and designs could be from a coin.

I have chosen this map because I thought it was interesting because it is from one of the European countries. This photo of this woman was interesting because the fashion, it looks like she's looking at something and how the photo is from awhile back so they used different materials. As for these beads they are made out of rock, clay or cement but one of the things I loved to do when I was younger was making beads like this. Next we have this handmade wooden wand. It reminds me of one of my favorite shows, Harry Potter. After that we have these heads, I forgot what they meant but what I can say is that this was there from Egypt. They have no face but you look closely their face was meant to be stitched together. Then there's this thing that's made out of two faces. You can tell that there's a girl and a boy. I've chosen this because I've never seen something like this before. The second to last thing there is a medical book from a while ago and I've always been interested in that kind of stuff so I had to add that to my 15 images. And Finally the last image is about a handmade heart. I thought it was cool and it could relate to the medical book so I've also added it to my images. The main point and theme I was trying to get at was from my past memories that were good. All of these photos had a reason why I enjoyed them and now I can turn them into something out of my own creation.

For my project, I plan on including all of these pictures in my project but they're all going to be in different paintings but in the same book. My project is going to have the similar dark colors to the book and the same goes with the texture. The outside of the book would be a little different so I would be mixing some things up a little but I want the cover of my book to be leather. Now my plan is to make everything by hand so that way it would have a lot more obstacles by making it but also you would also be able to see and feel the texture a lot more better. |
Planning:
In these two photos are my planning and process ideas. As you can tell by my sketches they have changed a bit through doing the process of this project. I also changed my ideas a tad bit because of the materials that I was using. Now however the plan was to make everything by hand so that it'll be more personal to me. I was going to use leather but that would cost a lot of money plus there would be so much to do in a very little time.
Experiment:
For my experimentation I've decided to practice how to sew paper together to create parts of the book. I had one of my MIAD teachers and a youtube video to show me how to do that part of the process. Now it was not easy with the kind of supplise I was limited with, but also it was hard because I was using super strong rope that was thin so it was giving me blisters on my fingers from using rope and a needle for the last few days. I've used thinner paper instead of the paper I used so that it'll be a little easier for me to try.

Process:
For my project I have decided to create a book that was all handmade but until I had realized I only had a few days to complete this project I couldn't make the paper by hand since it would take awhile to dry. So instead I've decided to use sketchbook paper. As you scroll down and look at my process photos there was a big change to my planning and processing to this project. In the first photo is my first ever handmade section piece of paper. Now it was not easy because of how I thought I made the paper, and sewing paper and rope was not really that fun. I do have to say that I've gotten into a grove of sewing paper together. I did have to ask for help from one of my teachers that did know how to sew paper together and also I've watched some videos on how to do the process of making a book. In the second photo as you can see I have completed 5 different sections and now the plan is to sow it together. Now it took me most of the school day to figure out how to put it together sense I've decided to do the harder way. After I came to a conclusion which was to connect the far right side and the far left side from the inside and out like I was weaving. Which brings us to the third photo, as you can possibly tell that the sewing part was done. from the inside there was a single double single double pattern going on until I decided to weave in and out which created more thickness in the middle to double triple double triple so on and so forth.

So now I've started to plan/sketch out what I would like to paint. One side is based on one of those heads from my inspiration but not only that I've decided to make it look like a soldier, based on how I painted the coat. And on the right side its a pocket watch, with a coin, postimage, and beads in the background. The reason why I have decided to paint something like this is because it's almost like a time travel, and a time capsule. In the next photo I've made the cover of the book. So inside of the cover I have used this thick cardboard so that it's almost like a hardcover book. I've shaped and measured how I wanted it to be. After that I've used tacky glue to glue the snake, leathery paper to the cardboard. Once that was all completed I glued the paper and the hardcover book together, it took about 12 hours to dry sense the book is thick, and dry. What I wished that I had done better was to make the cover a bit bigger, make the edges of the leathery paper look better where it's not noticeable and to make the paper more even. The reason why the paper wasn't even was I didn't think to measure the holes on each paper but otherwise this project turned out amazing. |
Compare and Contrast:
Similarities- The Similarities between my artwork and my inspiration is that they both have the same format. The themes were similar and I was trying to make it look like my inspiration, which was the rustic old vibe. Most of everything to my project and my inspiration was made by hand.
Differences- The differences between my artwork and my inspiration is that they are all made out of different supplies. There's multiple inspirations I have chosen to create this piece which means there's more to my project than just a picture. With my project it's more personal because I have gathered what I liked, things that I was grown up with but also my family generations jewelry.

Reflection:
Im very happy how my artwork turned out overall. I did have some complications while doing this project but I've gotten through them. One of the complications I had at the end of this project was trying to glue the cover and paper together. The other thing that I was having troubles with was lining up the paper so that it looks even. If I had to redo this project and I got to change anything it would be to make the paper more even, give myself more time and to make the cover a little bit bigger.

1. Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause effect relationship between your inspartion and its affect on your artwork? My inspiration and my artwork can very relate to each other but it's based on what I'm interested in.
2. What is the overall approach of the author has regarding the topic of your inspiration? The overall approach was to create something that can relate to 12 to 15 images that I was interested in. 3. What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discoverd about people, ideas, cultures, etc. While you researched your inspiration? I've learend how to put multiple ideas from multiple generations of things together. I've learned more of their background and why the designs were on it. 4. What was the central idea of theme around my research and inspiraton? The central idea was to create something from my interest, and to just have fun making it. 5. What inferences did you make while researching for you insperation? I've learned a little bit of cultural sense. I was researching fashion and stuff that might be rare now. |
